PRESIDENT’S CORNER

We had a successful 2007, and much was done to provide the members with activities and opportunities to take part in the shooting sports. The expansion to the clubhouse building a year or so ago and the new roof have been fine upgrades to the facility. Now we have more room for club activities and an indoor range for pellet pistol and archery competition. The additional classroom space is great for youth training. Hunter Safety, hunter ethics and other related instructional programs. Lighting was also installed on the Trap Range so users can use it later into the season.

The club also approved and recently completed a portion of another construction project. This included removing the old shooting benches, pouring a new concrete platform and constructing and installing six new shooting benches to get shooters out of the mud. When we finish the project we will have an extended roof to completely cover the range benches and protect shooters from inclement weather. We reconditioned the dirt backstops and replaced some large posts which support the target boards. We replaced the posts because range users shot through them. This unnecessary damage caused a lot of extra work. Please place all targets on the backboards and refrain from shooting the posts. We posted some new informational signs with safety rules and club policies. Please adhere to all posted signs and sign in on the log provided when you use the facility. As a reminder, this is a “members only” club, which requires all range users to have a current club membership, with the exception of escorted and supervised guests who are there at the invitation of the member. Members should be prepared to show their membership card when asked by any other member using the facility.

It takes considerable work to make our club viable and promote our activities. Taking care of the buildings, grounds and equipment as well as clean up requires manpower. It takes many volunteer hours to run the club fund raisers such as the annual banquet and the Fall gun sight-in service we conduct in preparation of hunting seasons. As you know, these funds are used to support and operate the club, support club projects and fund the scholarships to qualified students who are enrolled in college in pursuit of degrees in “conservation related” fields. We also provide support grants to other community-based conservation and outdoor education organizations and assist Hunter Safety education for community youth by providing a classroom and range. Some of the Hunter Safety instructors are club members. As in most organizations, only a dedicated few put in the many hours required to make the club viable, useful and a valued asset to its members and the community. We are exploring incentives to get more members actively involved in helping with the club’s work and projects. We could accomplish more with less of a burden on those comparative few in the membership who do most of the work.

One of the proposals under consideration is to increase dues, for an example, to $80 per year and then credit members at the rate of $8 or $10 per hour, up to $40 for work at club maintenance projects, grounds keeping, banquet volunteers, sight in assistance, etc. The dues would then remain the same to include insurance for those members who worked a few hours during the course of the year to further club projects and help at fund raisers. The officers and Board of Directors are soliciting comments from the membership regarding this proposal. Send comments to the club at Box 912, Hayward, WI, 54843, or e-mail to: haywardrodandgunclub@charter.net.

In conclusion, I’d like to take this opportunity to recognize those members who have provided special services to the club and have volunteered many hours of labor or made gifts of materials and equipment. First are Tom Jones, who is a member of the Board of Directors, and his wife, Char, of Hayward, who provided as a gift treated lumber, fasteners and labor to build the new shooting benches installed on the concrete platform. Tom has also provided plans and materials estimates to complete the planned roof extension on the rifle and pistol range this coming Spring.

Herb Leuthe, also a member of the Board of Directors, of Springbrook, WI, has put in countless hours over the last few years mowing and doing general maintenance and facility upkeep during the heavy use seasons. Then there is Gordon “Gordy” Valentine, also a Board member, who has put in many hours assisting in club projects and activities or the span of many years.

One of our newer members, Wayne Balsavich has assisted the club with his computer skills in updating the club’s website. Please take time to visit the website for information at: http://www.haywardrodandgunclub.com. Some parts are under construction; however, additional club information and activities will be placed on the site in coming months.

And last is Sheila Shambaugh, who is the Secretary/Treasurer, who has kept the minutes of our meetings and has managed club finances for many years. She also is the editor who puts together and sends out the newsletters, manages and keeps current membership rolls among many other duties. There are several others who put in many hours assisting with planning and working on the banquet committee, sight-in activities, etc. The efforts of all of the members who assist during the year are greatly appreciated. However, the members specifically mentioned are instrumental in making it possible for the membership to enjoy a safe and well maintained place where we, who enjoy the shooting sports, can go and participate in our shooting sports. I encourage all members who aren’t NRA members to join that organization. Protection of our 2nd Amendment right is VERY important. Again, thanks to all.

With Spring fast approaching, we are again looking forward to a successful annual banquet as well as another safe shooting and open water fishing season.

Good hunting and fishing!

Tom Braesch, President

PELLET LEAGUE RESULTS

Pellet league finished on March 25th with the Handicap Match. Final results for the High Scratch score, the winner was Tom Jones, who finished the ten weeks with a score of 2564 out of a possible 3000. Most improved shooter was Jim Rigotti, who improved his average over the ten weeks by 11.7 points; and the High Handicap prize went to Trevor Blackstone, only a second year shooter, who shot a 227, which is 23 points over his normal average. Nice shooting, guys.

TRAP SHOOTING

If Mother Nature cooperates, we would like to begin the trap shooting season on April 15th, as noted in the calendar above. However, if the snow banks up to the trap range have not melted by then, we’ll have to postpone shooting until the following week or until such time as we can get up to the range.
